Originally created in Germany under the name
"Die Aufsteiger" in 2008, The Climbers is the latest game import
to make its mark in the U.S. In this all-wooden, 3-D
strategy game, players maneuver colorful blocks and ladders as
they try to move their own climber to the highest point in the
ever-changing structure. The
Climbers can be played by as few as two people or by as many as
five. Each game package includes 35 colored blocks, 5
climber pawns, 5 blocking stones, 5 long ladders, 5 short
ladders and a rule book. |

INDIVIDUAL CATEGORY RATINGS
|
Like many strategy games out there,
The Climbers takes at least one run-through to really
understand the game play. While somewhat
intuitive, more experienced players definitely seem to
have an advantage here. Our review team took a few
rounds to get going, but once fully understanding the
game play and strategy, they were well on their way to
challenging games. |

Constructed of all wood and bright
painted on colors (more on that next), our review team
saw no cause for concern in the durability department.
Obviously, there are a lot of pieces, so parents will
want to make sure younger players do a good clean-up job
after game play so as not to lose any pieces.

Loaded with bright colored game
pieces and interesting game play - The Climbers
certainly caught more than one eye during the review
process. And our review team was quite certain the
game players in your life will appreciate the look of
The Climbers! |

Our review team absolutely love when
they come across a game that never plays the same way
twice - and that is exactly what they found with The
Climbers. Every time the players set up the game
you'll have a different playing surface, adding layer
after layer of functionality. Add in the strategy
component of game play and you have a super-functional
game, that plays different every time you play. |

Well - here's the first real
downfall for The Climbers. The price is high.
So high in fact that our review team was a good $20
below the actual cost on average in our blind survey of
pricing. With an actual retail price of $49.95
many of the members on our review team felt that this
was just too much to pay for a game. On the other
hand, there were a few folks who enjoyed the game play
so much, saw the value in the construction, and felt
that this was a game that could last a lifetime - so
they were a little less critical of the price. |

An absolute original! Not a
single member of our review team had ever played
anything quite like The Climbers. Sure, they've
played games where you de-construct a tower (Jenga), but
never where you worked at climbing up one. |

The Climbers earned itself a
solid 4+ stars from our review team. Had the
pricing fallen in line with what they were used to,
this would have definitely been a 5 star rating.
The game itself is original, great to look at and
absolutely fun to play. Our team loved that
you'd never have the same game twice too! The
recommendation is simple here - if you don't mind
paying a bit more for a game, than you won't be
disappointed with The Climbers! |
